How to get the best out of your AFA trip?

Hey everyone, it’s the Captain here & just wanted to share my own thoughts on how you can get the most out of your visit to the epic Anime Festival Asia in Singapore. 2013 will be AFA’s 6th year running & it has grown + expanded in leaps & bounds in the last 6 years. This event is SO massive that last years AFASG clocked in about 80,000 visitors over 2 days. Thats a pretty amazing feat.

Well despite the huge turn out thru the years, there are still those who have yet to make their first trip to AFASG… or maybe this year is this year you make your first trip! I myself have been to AFASG in 2009, 2010 & 2012. I also was fortunate to be part of the inaggural AFA Malaysia in 2012. So if you are a going to make your first AFA trip or planning for your first trip? This blog post is for you ๐Ÿ˜€

I have cosplayed at AFA before but I really felt that it was BEST enjoyed as a con-goer, a fan or as an open minded person with a curious heart! Seriously, there is nothing wrong with cosplaying at AFASG but it is just my opinion that all the hustle of transport with your luggage, cosplay preparation & security of my belongs just saps away the time I have to experience the event. Mind you, I’m travelling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia via bus… because it is more economical. If it were a local event… I’d have my own car to drive & I’d already be the expert on the venue location huhu ๐Ÿ™‚

So how to get the best out of your AFASG Trip?

OK let’s start at the very beginning. The most important item u need for the first step in your AFASG is the event brochure! This contains the vital event information on the various activities – happening at what time? & which location? This is vital to your fulfillment as a con goer. Once equipped with this, you can move on ๐Ÿ™‚

1) Please beย botheredย to read!

It really not difficult to get information about AFA or other things pertaining to it. Ticketing info, location, guest list etc. is all released & updated from time to time on their website & Facebook page ๐Ÿ™‚ The venue is also pretty well labelled with signage in English ๐Ÿ™‚

2) Be early!

AFA is pretty on time when it comes to events / stage activities . The schedule is compact & there is always something going on at a different location at the event. And to fit all these things into 2 – 3 days means that they will use every minute available to make sure the congoers also get their substantial chance to be fulfilled as a fan!

I’d like to make reference for the exclusive official licensed merchandise – “The early bird STILL gets the worm”. Figures, tees, CD albums, special deals, autograph session passes… all available early too ๐Ÿ™‚

3) Plan your journey & know your surroundings

Again the wisdom of “those who fail to plan, plan to fail” is proven. You have to know where the venue is? Which MRT station do I go to? Where to get off the train? –

So make sure u know where the venue is & how to get there via MRT which is the most efficient. You can also plan your journey via bus company routes. – http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/

And not to forget – know the location of your favourite booths for merchandise, autograph sessions etc.

4) Plan your Meals

Since the schedule is tight, you might stray away from thinking about meals but we will surely get hungry eventually. I would advise a good breakfast before going in. If a lot of the attractions you like are on that same day I would op to bring / pack / take-away / some food in. You would want to know where are the food places… or the food places that fit your budget. A hunger person looking for food in a hurry will probably won’t be thrifty on both their money or time… something has got to give when you’re not prepared hehe.

5) Be alert!

Keep your eyes a & your ears open to catch your favourite celebrities. It would help if you know what they look like in public because some of them, especially cosplayers, you a whole lot different with out their make up & costume ๐Ÿ™‚ Going to AFASG means your chance to see your catch a glimpse of your favourite stars are 100% guaranteed! Celebrity Cosplayers, Favourite Seiyu, Favourite Music artist, Favourite musician, Favourite illustrator, Moe Maids, Bishie Butlers… their all already here!

Some fortunate moment I’ve had – see the pics below.

6) Don’t be shy to ask & don’t be hurt to be turned down.

I believe in the “asking’ principle. If you want something, you should ‘ask’ for it.Of course u there will be times when you will be turned down. But, in my own experience, you will be rewarded more times than turned down ๐Ÿ™‚ However do remember that most artistes & guest are very willing to allow photo opportunities & autographs but it is their management, manager or organizers who would disallow this for various reason.

Some fortunate moment I’ve had – see the pics below.

Who is this guest that I must BRAVE to ask?

Hope this has helped you … or will help you on your trip. In the mean time enjoy the conventions & I will see you the next event!

  1. I can relate to you on the ‘be alert’ part!!! Artiste might just be around the corner when you’re walking around AFA.

I bumped into TMR at the Merlion Park after AFA last year. Was too shy to go up and get a handshake OTL. Visit some tourist spots in Singapore and who knows you might bump into your idol XD
