Malaysia COMIC CON just announced!

Original article here: Malaysia COMIC CON just announced!

KUALA LUMPUR, 20th February 2018 – As the all the Lunar Celebrations….visitations and feasting is starting to subside. I just caught wind that a legit “Comic Con” is gonna make it’s debut in Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre to be exact, 13 – 15 July 2018. (http://www.asiacomiccon.com/)

ACC resized

The Origins
Not to be confused with ComicCon Asia (https://comiccon.asia/), the Manila SUPER event that Stan ‘The Man’ Lee is  headlining, Asia Comic seems to be hailing from Thailand… which in the past has a been another source for pop culture fans to rejoice – *WINK Thank you* Japan Expo Malaysia 2017 and *WINK Thank You* Japan Expo Thailand 2018 (which featured AKB48… fans went nuts). Despite Thailand having 2 existing ‘Comic Cons’ – Thailand Comic Con and Bangkok Comic Con, only the former has managed to survive since it’s debut in 2014 . Bangkok Comic Con ran from 2015 and stopped at 2016. In 2018… Bangkok Comic Con returns with a twist… they are joining forces with Thailand Comic Con for a mega event on 21 – 23 April!

So despite these 2 existing Comic Cons hailing from Thailand, this Asia Comic Con that’s being held in Bangkok and in KL is NOT organised by the initial two folks haha I mean that’s from what I can gather anyway. Anyone know more?

Which brings me to my first question? So who are these guys? And then my second question – how can I help them? The latter is kinda impossible since I don’t have the answer to the first question haha

Great Expectations
Anyhow from what it reads, the event is promising a “WORLD CLASS Comic Con” experience. For my expectations? I am expecting quite a bit!! Haha I am expecting (hoping rather) that missing element that even Singapore’s STGCC doesn’t have – Hollywood Star power guest! This elusive element is really what I think makes a legit “Comic Con”… especially if you are referring to San Diego Comic-Con aka Comic-Con International…. the longest running comic convention in the world.

Can’t Hardly Wait
With the event just 5 months away, I SO looking forward to the guest announcements in the days to come! Fellow friends and fans will be holding on to the dream of a legit Comic Con in Malaysia, REJOICE… and again I say rejoice! And to the organisers, whoever you are – THANK YOU!!

Marvel Legends Black Panther series arrives

r8Kuala Lumpur, 1st February 2018: A fortunate stroll thru Toys R Us let to this discovery!

THE 2018  VALENTINE MOVIE: With the movie coming soon… I was wondering when was the new Marvel Legends series will hit shelves. I’m sure the specialty stores would have already got them but that’s not what I post about here anyways xD Of course if any of your speciality stores wanna work together with us, do let us know! Our email is PopCultureFun.MY@gmail.com

“..get this man a shield!”
We’ve already got friends posting photos of the Avengers: Infinity War ML figures from Australia… with the greatest reveal being, besides what characters / version, Captain America’s new shield …aka the Wakanda shield… aka “get this man a shield!”. *Honestly, as a Captain America fan I am guessing that this shield included in the Avengers: Infinity War ML figure is the shield that Cap initially uses to fan off wave 1 of the baddies… then later in the movie T’Challa will say “…and get this man a shield” – which will end up with the reveal (which MCU boss Kevin Fiege is saving for us) Caps new shield!! I am guessing it will be Caps Energy Shield or Caps ‘The Captain’ Shield (black, red, white)… or a bit of both… being Caps energy shield with ‘The Captain’ design or colours!! I think bossman Kevin Fiege is too intelligent to let something like Caps shield leak via Hasbro Toys / Lego!! After 10 years and 15 movies… their are very sneaky… very sneaky indeed! Haha Fun trivia. So you heard it first here as The Captain is calling it!!

Anyways… again, our post here at Pop Culture Fun – Malaysia is about a) What toys we can find straight on the retail store shelves b) Right here in Malaysia. 😊

r9So again, I was fortunate enough to walk into a Toys R Us only to see the new Marvel Legends Black Panther series about to be put on the racks!! Woo hoo! If you’ve seen the ML Civil War series Black Panther then you’re probably not all that curious to know what this figure looks like. And again since only 3 of the 6 new figures in this wave are actually from the upcoming Black Panther movie… the Hasbro guys are gonna split the ‘movie’ selection into two as they did with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 figures.

One of the happy feels to be present and actually see what’s in the box / case / carton is to know for sure what’s there. Knowing the methods of the Hasbro folks, they might do a switcheroo in the packing! The Americana reviews or intel could be different from the Asian markets… just as how pricing and selection can be different between Malaysia & Singapore. – see article: Star Wars Toys Malaysia Doesn’t Get!!

In the box are 2x Black Panther, 2x Erik Killmonger, 1x Nakia, 1x Black Bolt, 1x Invincible Iron Man, 1x Sub-Mariner. The Build A Figure (BAF) is Okoye. r7

Looking at the Black Panther in the box, it looks pretty similar to the Civil War series version but if you put them side by side… then the details, patterns and ingrained textures become more evident. Surprisingly eve the silver lining on the helmet / mask is significantly different. The ‘movie’ version comes with an extra pair of hands (fists) and a unmasked head sculpt with beard / goatee… compared to the ‘civil war’ clean shaven head with no extra hands. r4

From what I have briefly read online, fans have said that the newer version has better pose-ability compared to the ‘civil war’ version. This will be a crucial point for the collector fans… those who leave them in the box & those who take the figures out of the box 😀 I am the former, so it most likely means I won’t  be getting this version or any of the characters from the movie.THE OTHERS IN THE SERIES
With that said, the other non-movie figures are looking very VERY nice! After revisiting the comics & watching the entire 8 episodes of the TV series INHUMANS… this is the Black Bolt, I know… and this this the Black Bolt I remember! Worthy to carry the title KING of the Inhumans!! r2

Inhumans Fantastic Four 83
Some Jack Kirby art from Fantastic Four #83

Also, that Sub-Mariner figure! Fuyo! I think he might the least clothed Marvel Legends figure of the Hasbro era… and he is totally pulling of the buff bod compared to DC’s King of the Seas! Again, the Sub-Mariner is a of some royalty being the Prince of Atlantis.

Just like this figure, he doesn’t need some fancy shiny armour to make him look badass. It’s just naturally present! John Buscema and Sol Brodsky did a great job setting this precedence, SALUTE!

Sub-Mariner #1

Some trivia for non-fans… as a Captain America fan, I read a lot about Namor The Sub-Mariner because he was very tied with the rediscovery of Captain America in the ice. Later, he also teams up with Cap as a member of The Invaders against the axis powers! Then I also read the Fantastic Four whom also had a lot of encounters with the Sub-Mariner too… most notably kidnaping Sue Storm twice in attempts to court her. DUDE! What chu doing lah? Haha

The Invaders #1

Mighty Muggs 2018 Have Landed!

Original article here: Pop Culture Fun Malaysia = Mighty Muggs 2018 Have Landed!

re 1Kuala Lumpur, 8 January 2018: Just a week into the new year, I was walking thru Aeon Sunway Pyramid and caught a glimpse of a very small size Hasbro box reading “6 Pcs” and “MARVEL CLASSIC”. Wait a minute. I haven’t seen this before.

Obviously my eyes are searching to see if it says Marvel Legends and in particularly the earlier X-Men wave which I am still hoping to get Deadpool and to see (for the first time), a Deadpool on the retail store shelf that isn’t sold in SET or sold by scalpers! haha

re 3Anyhow the box read MVL MIGHTY MUGGS AST and it drew me closer. All the thoughts were jogging thru my head… trying to figure out what Wave was this? What characters? I didn’t even know that this project was CONFIRMED revived other than just sample photos last year. And from those photos, they didn’t look interesting. Then there is also the pricing issue… that usually is the deciding factor.

I was surprised that I saw it first at Aeon and not Toys R Us as we know that TRU just takes in so much stock of Hasbro, Mattel and Lego products. It really was a pleasant surprise to bump into this as I am a BIG collector of the original Mighty Muggs (2007)… so so on the Mini Muggs and very rarely Micro Muggs because it was more like the Iron Man Micro Muggs -__-

So this is the official Wave 1 – Marvel Mighy Muggs (2018) MARVEL CLASSIC line up in the box of six figures. 2x Captain America, 1x Groot, 1x Hulk, 1x Spider-man, 1x Black Widow. RM59.90 each. Each character comes with 3 facial expressions. Just push the head down to switch it. Reminds me so much of the He-Man (and the Masters of the Universe) character toy – Man-E Faces. Though appearing rarely in the cartoon series, most kids just had to have this toy figure because – you change his face = THAT’S COOL!! haha. re 2

The first reaction to the images that surfaced last year was that the look of the art work. Something about it that didn’t jazz attractively enough for me. Some friends were spot on when they said.. the characters now have a Disney touch to the way they look, and I do agree. I felt it had more cartoony / kiddy style then a comic / cartoon style which was what drew us to it the first time round. This and the fact that it was priced affordably for the average spending fan!

On a closer look as Captain America fan, this version does look a lot like the Captain America: The First Avenger movie (WWII) costume version rather than what it says on the box – ‘Marvel Classic’ haha unless this has now become a ‘classic’ hit for fans… and they only plan to release ONE version of Cap (yea right), then ok lah hehe Exect many more versions & in different colours … metalic… non metalic… exclusives SDCC, Toys R Us, Walmart, Walgreens, PX Previews, Entertainment Earth etc. the list goes on haha

Really didn’t plan to add to the list of Stuff To Buy but the price was pretty decent, it was Captain America and its a Mighty Muggs reiteration :/

Am glad the Muggs are back as it all came to an abrupt stop back in the original run… for no apparent reason. So I hope it continues to run long & wide. Happy 10 years later reboot #MightyMuggs

Yet another new item to put into the collection checklist. For it to come back from the dead is as good as in a new licensee producing something cool x__x haha #BadFortheWallet #Pokai #SuckMyMoney RM59.90 for each is pretty decent price for a cute chibi licensed collectible like this.

Star Wars Toys Malaysia Doesn’t Get! – 2017

Original article from Pop Culture Fun – Malaysia = HERE

Kuala Lumpur: 31 August is known to Malaysians as a…. PUBLIC HOLIDAY first haha What’s the occasion? Hari Merdeka… Independance Day for folks in Malaysia! This year, 2017, it had another cause for celebration – Force Friday II!

What is Force Friday?
Basically Force Friday is an event where Star Wars licensees launch all the new series / season of  Star Wars merchandise / toys / collectibles. It is a globally synchronized event organised by selected toy retailers (the big named ones), who use a ‘stroke of midnight unveiling’ style event aka ‘midnight launch’. The festivities on the list include crowd interaction fun games, activities,  trivia quiz, costume contest, which is held through the time of 10pm – 11:59pm. This can be very testing because the mall / shops close at 10pm, which means air-conditioning is shut down. Woe to the costumers!

So Malaysia’s Force Friday II took place in Mid Valley’s Toys R Us outlet. The gathering was a much anticipated one as it gave friends & fans  yet a another date on the calender to geek out!! The others are May 4th (May The FOuRth) or May 6th (revenge of the SIxTH), Star Wars READS, The Road to [Next Star Wars Movie]… and now Force Friday and other Star Wars movie anniversary. This year was a grand year as 2017 marked the 40th anniversary release of Star Wars: A New Hope.

_DSC7894Coincidentally, Tourism Singapore & Disney worked out a 3 year deal that will place Star Wars attractions at various locations in Singapore, launched on Force Friday II. This event is called Experience the Force SINGAPORE. Famous vehicles (and other displays like character statues) from the Star Wars universe, from miniature models to full sized 1:1 scale, will be build and placed at selected locations thru out Singapore and will be moved from location to location as time goes by.

So I was fortunately that Experience the Force SG, also ran through STGCC, which I was making my trip to. STGCC is Singapore Toys Games Comic Convention aka Singapore’s Comic Con.

Force Friday II Singapore was held in ION Orchard and the Experience the Force SG were held there itself within the mall as well as the whole entire street walk way on ION Orchard and the cross section of Orchard Road & Scott’s Road.

RELATED ARTICLE: Have fun with the AR elements of Experience the Force SG, even without going there! #FindTheForce

Now that the back ground is set, back to the topic above.

I’ve heard friends & fans say before, that here in Malaysia we don’t get certain items / certain models of collectibles. Dollar for dollar, items in Malaysia were cheaper after conversion. Example a Hasbro 3.75″ figure would cost RM40, the same figure would cost S$20. So if you convert by some 2.85 Ringgit to the S$ dollar… it would be cheaper for Singaporean collectors to cross the border & buy in Malaysia. So in this light I think it’s a fair trade off for Malaysians. We don’t get everything, but for what we get (basic stuff), it’s slightly cheaper.

Regional Price Change
Then from 2015 I started noticing a big change at the pricing, the regional pricing and of course the weak Ringgit getting weaker. Now it seems that basic figures in Malaysia have gotten a price hike almost twice in a year which was 2016. Example Marvel Legends 6″ figures from RM79.95… jumped to RM99.95 and then to RM139.95. From 99.95 to RM139.95 within the same year, from one Marvel movie to another. Ridiculous.

Mean while, in Singapore Marvel Legends 6″ are priced at S$39.90 which converting at 3.12 still equals about RM 124.80. The difference is still about RM15 at the high of 3.12. This goes the same for the beloved Star Wars Black Series 6″ figures. And at the end of the day we still don’t get those special triple pack, or two pack or collectors edition. This really has Malaysia friends & fans angered.

The Stuff Malaysia Doesn’t Get
At least for Marvel fans, we can still get most of the Marvel stuff released by Hasbro but our Star Wars friends & fans are not so fortunate. Most of it is Hasbro stuff, though not all of it are. So here are the items that we spotted at Force Friday Singapore that Malaysia didn’t get…. nor do we know if we’ll ever get. #DamnTheMan

UnBoxing – The Kamen Rider Wizard DX

Hey everybody, I was grateful to be given the opportunity to unbox the official Kamen Rider Wizard’s DX Wizard Driver and the DX Sword Gun.

Just some quick info, this is the 23 rendition of Kamen Rider, I think. Wizard comes in after Fourze ends. As the name suggests, Kamen Rider Wizard uses magic to summon his powers. It may look like the Dr. Strange movie took a page out of this series but fact is that the magical world of Dr. Strange started way back in 1963 and was presented to us as such through the creative vision of Mr. Steve Ditko and Mr. Stan Lee.

Returning to the topic, Kamen Rider Wizard uses special power rings to engage the element form he wants – Flame (red), Water (blue), Land (yellow), Hurricane (green). These same rings also engage the munitions of choice for his Sword Gun. The next set of rings are those of which he will use for a special move to go along with that element.

For example: if he has chosen to be the Hurricane (green) element form, then chooses to use the Kick Strike ring move – he will then perform a Hurricane Kick Strike = which looks like a down striking kick but he also spins like a drill while descending! What’s Kamen Rider without a power flying kick move! Haha

For the full photo album of the DX Wizard Driver set & the DX Wizard Sword Gun, click here.

Here are the video of the unboxing. Hope you like them.

The Kamen Rider Wizard Driver aka. DX Wizard Driver set retails for RM499.90

Comes with 3 rings – Flame (red), Water (blue) and Kick Strike!

The Kamen Rider Wizard Sword Gun aka. DX Wizard SwordGun set retails for RM299.90

Comes with 2 rings – Land (yellow), Hurricane (green).

Do let us know what you think of it. And what you all would want to see more off. Thanks for reading.

STGCC 2017 – Preview

By The Captain for Pop Culture Fun – Malaysia 2017!
Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention RETURNS this weekend at the world famous Marina Bay Sands. This years event is an extremely special one as it marks the 10th Anniversary of the brand. Times really flies and this event has really morphed & transformed in these past 10 years.

I can remember so clearly as I made plans with Outpost Productions Commander, Richard Chua, to travel to Singapore to check out this debut event back in 2008! Half way planning then all plans are messed up because guess what else is debuting in Singapore…. the first ever F1 Singapore Grand Prix!! And it’s a night race too!! Roads were blocked, bus routes were changed, accommodation was in shock… our trip nearly didn’t take place haha.

Anyways, STGCC has come a long way since then. But the biggest change… or the morphing + transforming part came when Reed Exhibitions bought over the brand. Now things really got interesting as the worldwide network of Reeds strong arm is now available to what was already known to be the regional hub of South East Asia.

I only made my first (Reed Pop Era) STGCC visit in 2014 and it was great!! But seriously… I really wanted to make for STGCC 2013 because of all the MARVELous stuff brought by Hot Toys!! THAT 1:1 display IRON MAN HALL OF ARMOUR!! Oh man… the photos look mesmerizing. Well, better 2014 than never!! 2014 was Hot Toys year to debut their brand new Star Wars stuff, so my theme expectation had to change! Then I came back the following year in 2015 and had another great encounter with Western Pop Culture!! I couldn’t make it in 2016 so I am definitely doing my best to head over this year for the it’s 10th outing!! And heading to STGCC 2017 with the Outpost Productions Commander – R.Chua is the perfect way to celebrate this trip!!

My TOP 5 Reason To Go STGCC in Reed Pop Era:
1) Meeting Marvel & DC artists: Oliver Coipel, David Mack, Cameron Steward, Adi Granov, Humberto Ramos, Harvey Talibao, Jim Cheung, Adam Hughes, C.B. Cebulski, Philip Tan etc.
2) Group Panel talks with the guests
3) Browsing Western Comics, memorabilia and collectibles.
4) Catching up with Singapore friends & Malaysian friends in Singapore
5) Online Media folks are treated so well in contrast to events in Malaysia.

My TOP 5 Reasons to go STGCC 2017
1) It’s the 10th Anniversary man!! It’s a big deal for any event!!
2) Western Comic Guests: Legendary Level Artist Mr. Art Adams, Frank Cho, David Mack, Adi Granov, James C. Mulligan… etc
3) Star Wars: Experience the Force Singapore – a whole buzz of activities & events on Orchard Road.
