It’s an announcement of SUPERHERO proportions!! Just days after I wrote a short piece about the 3 events, that I go to Singapore to get a professionally organised event experience that is well themed and immersive – GameStart 2018 Announcement – and now comes this major announcement!
The two organisers of South East Asia’s PREMIERE Anime event and Gaming event are joining forces!!
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – it’s called “Avengers Assemble”!
In the DC Expanded Universe (DCEU) – Come together! – “Unite the League!”
In the DC TV Universe – it’s call “Team Up”.
In the official press release below – Anime Festival Asia organisers, SOZO and GameStart Asia organisers, Eliphant will move into a ALL-NEW strategic alliance, partnership and a spiffy new office in Paya Lebar iPark in Singapore.
Can you imagine what they now can achieve with their “powers combined”? (*Captain Planet reference* haha) The regions Best of Japanese Pop Culture + The Best of Gaming beefing up each others events… into new / newer territories? #OHMY
We can’t stop imagining so we’ll just leave it be till official announcements are released! Till then this is the official press release! -The Captain-
SINGAPORE, 1 MARCH 2018: The producers of Anime Festival Asia and GameStart Asia team up to further develop ACG (Anime, Cosplay, Gaming) contents in SE Asia.
Organisers expect new expansion of events in Asia together
Singapore, 28 February 2017 – SOZO, organiser of Southeast Asia’s largest Japanese pop culture event Anime Festival Asia (AFA), and Eliphant, organiser of Southeast Asia’s premier gaming convention GameStart, have announced that both entities will form a strategic alliance to further strengthen existing events, and to create and develop new events in Asia.
The SOZO and Eliphant alliance aims to be the first step to roll out an integrated support system to further strengthen the community. By leveraging their strengths as IP innovators and event trailblazers, SOZO and Eliphant hope to provide new and inspiring ways for fans to enjoy their hobbies in gaming, animation and beyond.
With the support of SOZO, who has already established their presence in Indonesia, 2018 will mark the very first regional expansion of GameStart as they launch their very first: GameStart Indonesia. AFA will continue hosting its key events in both Indonesia and Singapore and hope to introduce more gaming content as part of their content offerings.
“Southeast Asia emerges as one of the fastest growing markets for gaming and content, we recognised that both AFA and GameStart audiences have diverse interests in both gaming and anime. With our partnership, we hope to work closely to bring even more exhilarating content and holistic experiences to both fanbases across the regions,” said Shawn Chin, Managing Director of SOZO and founder of Anime Festival Asia.
“We are extremely excited to be able to bring our event to various regions, with the support of our partners. We are determined to support the regional gaming industry, especially in esports and game development. We are positive that our partnership will provide more events and enable us to bring awesome content to both gamers and anime fans, ” said Elicia Lee, founder of GameStart Asia and CEO of Eliphant Pte Ltd.
As of 1st March 2018, both SOZO and Eliphant have moved to a new office premise together to further strengthen their alliance. Organisers expect an exciting year ahead and look forward to announcing more about 2018 calendar of events in the upcoming weeks.

KUALA LUMPUR, 20th February 2018 – As the all the Lunar Celebrations….visitations and feasting is starting to subside. I just caught wind that a legit “Comic Con” is gonna make it’s debut in Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre to be exact, 13 – 15 July 2018. (http://www.asiacomiccon.com/)
Not to be confused with ComicCon Asia (https://comiccon.asia/), the Manila SUPER event that Stan ‘The Man’ Lee is headlining, Asia Comic seems to be hailing from Thailand… which in the past has a been another source for pop culture fans to rejoice – *WINK Thank you* Japan Expo Malaysia 2017 and *WINK Thank You* Japan Expo Thailand 2018 (which featured AKB48… fans went nuts). Despite Thailand having 2 existing ‘Comic Cons’ – Thailand Comic Con and Bangkok Comic Con, only the former has managed to survive since it’s debut in 2014 . Bangkok Comic Con ran from 2015 and stopped at 2016. In 2018… Bangkok Comic Con returns with a twist… they are joining forces with Thailand Comic Con for a mega event on 21 – 23 April!
IRONICALLY Part 2
So despite these 2 existing Comic Cons hailing from Thailand, this Asia Comic Con that’s being held in Bangkok and in KL is NOT organised by the initial two folks haha I mean that’s from what I can gather anyway. Anyone know more?
Which brings me to my first question? So who are these guys? And then my second question – how can I help them? The latter is kinda impossible since I don’t have the answer to the first question haha
Anyhow from what it reads, the event is promising a “WORLD CLASS Comic Con” experience. For my expectations? I am expecting quite a bit!! Haha I am expecting (hoping rather) that missing element that even Singapore’s STGCC doesn’t have – Hollywood Star power guest! This elusive element is really what I think makes a legit “Comic Con”… especially if you are referring to San Diego Comic-Con aka Comic-Con International…. the longest running comic convention in the world.
Can’t Hardly Wait
With the event just 5 months away, I SO looking forward to the guest announcements in the days to come! Fellow friends and fans will be holding on to the dream of a legit Comic Con in Malaysia, REJOICE… and again I say rejoice! And to the organisers, whoever you are – THANK YOU!!

Malaysian’s largest Anime Comics & Games event RETURNS to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in 2017!! This was among the many worthy headlines for CF2017. However, what I would want like to write about is that Kore Yamazaki sensei (creator The Ancient Magus’ Bride) made an appearance at Comic Fiesta 2017 courtesy of ANIPLUS Asia!!
So firstly, it is a very special (and rare) treat to have the chance to meet a manga creator on your own home country! Our first real opportunity came in 2016 when the Manga Festival (CoFesta) suddenly was announced & Malaysia fans got to the chance to meet / greet / autograph from Ryoko Kui, Kosuke Fujishima, Rino Mizuho and Naoshi Komi. But that was a one-and-done thing as no news of a repeat 2017 event or it’s linked event JPOP Signature which was a part of a bigger event called JAPAN WEEKEND.
I’ve been in the local ACG scene for about 12 years now & it’s already nothing of a surprise with the number of one-and-done events, fake event organisers or events just plainly disappearing off the list the following year. I don’t about the average fan but The Captain is pretty used to it and the words of wisdom are “enjoy it while you can, don’t wait for next year as you don’t know what will happen next year!!”. Case and point is ANIMAX Carnival Malaysia 2017! 😀
So fans of Kore Yamazaki who came for the meet & greet session, WELL DONE because you braved the crowd & the comfort of simply NOT GOING TO CF… to come down to KLCC meet her!! Who knows when you might have this chance again! This video is a salute to you all.
A big thanks to ANIPLUS Asia for bringing her, at no cost to us fans, here in Malaysia!! Here are some other happenings at the ANIPLUS Asia booth at Comic Fiesta 2017!

The Ancient Magus’ Bride has since been translated into over 14 languages and has been well-received by readers worldwide, even making it onto The New York Times’ best seller lists.
About The Ancient Magus’ Bride
“A story to know the beauty of the world”

Just when all hope seems lost, a fateful encounter awaits her. When a man with the head of a beast, wielding strange powers, obtains her through a slave auction, Chise’s life will never be the
The man is a “magus”, a sorcerer of great power, who decides to free Chise from the bonds of captivity. The magus then makes a bold statement: Chise will become his apprentice–and his bride!

Original article from Pop Culture Fun – Malaysia = HERE
Kuala Lumpur: 31 August is known to Malaysians as a…. PUBLIC HOLIDAY first haha What’s the occasion? Hari Merdeka… Independance Day for folks in Malaysia! This year, 2017, it had another cause for celebration – Force Friday II!
What is Force Friday?
Basically Force Friday is an event where Star Wars licensees launch all the new series / season of Star Wars merchandise / toys / collectibles. It is a globally synchronized event organised by selected toy retailers (the big named ones), who use a ‘stroke of midnight unveiling’ style event aka ‘midnight launch’. The festivities on the list include crowd interaction fun games, activities, trivia quiz, costume contest, which is held through the time of 10pm – 11:59pm. This can be very testing because the mall / shops close at 10pm, which means air-conditioning is shut down. Woe to the costumers!
So Malaysia’s Force Friday II took place in Mid Valley’s Toys R Us outlet. The gathering was a much anticipated one as it gave friends & fans yet a another date on the calender to geek out!! The others are May 4th (May The FOuRth) or May 6th (revenge of the SIxTH), Star Wars READS, The Road to [Next Star Wars Movie]… and now Force Friday and other Star Wars movie anniversary. This year was a grand year as 2017 marked the 40th anniversary release of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Coincidentally, Tourism Singapore & Disney worked out a 3 year deal that will place Star Wars attractions at various locations in Singapore, launched on Force Friday II. This event is called Experience the Force SINGAPORE. Famous vehicles (and other displays like character statues) from the Star Wars universe, from miniature models to full sized 1:1 scale, will be build and placed at selected locations thru out Singapore and will be moved from location to location as time goes by.
So I was fortunately that Experience the Force SG, also ran through STGCC, which I was making my trip to. STGCC is Singapore Toys Games Comic Convention aka Singapore’s Comic Con.
Force Friday II Singapore was held in ION Orchard and the Experience the Force SG were held there itself within the mall as well as the whole entire street walk way on ION Orchard and the cross section of Orchard Road & Scott’s Road.
RELATED ARTICLE: Have fun with the AR elements of Experience the Force SG, even without going there! #FindTheForce
Now that the back ground is set, back to the topic above.
I’ve heard friends & fans say before, that here in Malaysia we don’t get certain items / certain models of collectibles. Dollar for dollar, items in Malaysia were cheaper after conversion. Example a Hasbro 3.75″ figure would cost RM40, the same figure would cost S$20. So if you convert by some 2.85 Ringgit to the S$ dollar… it would be cheaper for Singaporean collectors to cross the border & buy in Malaysia. So in this light I think it’s a fair trade off for Malaysians. We don’t get everything, but for what we get (basic stuff), it’s slightly cheaper.
Regional Price Change
Then from 2015 I started noticing a big change at the pricing, the regional pricing and of course the weak Ringgit getting weaker. Now it seems that basic figures in Malaysia have gotten a price hike almost twice in a year which was 2016. Example Marvel Legends 6″ figures from RM79.95… jumped to RM99.95 and then to RM139.95. From 99.95 to RM139.95 within the same year, from one Marvel movie to another. Ridiculous.
Mean while, in Singapore Marvel Legends 6″ are priced at S$39.90 which converting at 3.12 still equals about RM 124.80. The difference is still about RM15 at the high of 3.12. This goes the same for the beloved Star Wars Black Series 6″ figures. And at the end of the day we still don’t get those special triple pack, or two pack or collectors edition. This really has Malaysia friends & fans angered.
The Stuff Malaysia Doesn’t Get
At least for Marvel fans, we can still get most of the Marvel stuff released by Hasbro but our Star Wars friends & fans are not so fortunate. Most of it is Hasbro stuff, though not all of it are. So here are the items that we spotted at Force Friday Singapore that Malaysia didn’t get…. nor do we know if we’ll ever get. #DamnTheMan

- Nerf Poe Dameron Blaster
FANS PISSED OFF – MID – [Level 6 of 10] Not so hyped as Poe has yet to use his blaster as of Ep7. Who knows in Ep8

The local mobile gaming scene just took another step forward with the unveiling of Great Wall iGame Sdn. Bhd. to the public. In short, yes… they will be introducing more games to the Malaysia market… but the more significant portion of their contribution will be their new proprietary integrated e-pay system called UMU Wallet.
Their first game is an straight forwardly called Tembak Ikan! It’s like the 4 player arcade fishing game except instead of throwing a fishing line… you’re just shooting the many varieties of sea creatures with a ‘canon’. It’s like Galaga under the sea! haha
It’s simple and quite addictive. Each shot uses up credits so shoot when it counts. When you start of you have 2 types of guns a ‘canon’ like machine gun that shoot s quite rapidly and the electricity focus gun that can track targets but is less powerful. I’d call it the Ghostbusters gun haha since it was introduced way back in 1984 😀
Anyways, look out for it. It’s available now on Android (Google PLAY) & iOS (App Store).

To be honest I was quite sure this concert was going to be SOLD OUT! The only question was how soon! haha And more concerned if the local fans here in the very fortunate host country… did they managed to get some tickets for themselves
What I actually expected this morning was to wake up & login in to the http://www.myticket.asia and read that the site had crashed from the amount of people trying to get in xD haha a big “ERROR 521 – Server Down” sign haha But then again it was already announced there were only 6,500 tickets available…. but then again it’s Miku… people from Europe might even be trying to get some tickets!!
Exact details are not yet known…. sometimes this doesn’t mean that the all tickets are sold out, X amount of physical tickets are still available for a later date…. block booking amount of tickets for corporate folks, or even X amount allocated for upcoming contests for the sponsors + partners!
Anyhow there will be many fans disappointed that they couldn’t get tickets… but I congratulate the organisers Astro for a job well done. Why? Well because this is the first time in a very long time that a Japanese artiste concert has been professionally organised & SOLD OUT!!
So at the end of the day, it’s a WIN for MALAYSIA… something very scarce these days. It’s a win for MALAYSIA fans as probably more Japanese concerts will be hosted here in our own country! We have a pretty big land for an Asian country and our currency is weak compared to the giants of Asia. So to all the organisers, artiste, celebrities… come and host your event here!! Haha
