Game Start Asia 2017 – Preview

3 Reasons I am Grateful:

  1. I am so grateful that these regional events are held just across the causeway in Singapore which conveniently accessible with many transport options, included the most cost effective one – Express Coach.
  2. These events are organised by corporate professionals, event organisers and industry leaders in a country that is know to be the choice regional hub for many corporate giants! That’s some pretty high standards to hold up for organiser, venue provider and promoter.
  3. These events go to greater lengths to accommodate the media. The favour and facilities provided are so apparent that I feel the contrast is almost obscene.

And this is only my experience with Malaysia & Singapore events! Who knows what other convention wisdom is out there in countries like Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, Canada, America… and even San Diego etc. 😀

Here’s the official press release for whats coming up! All the good stuff!

seam-2017-mix-banner-1200X500Singapore, 25 August 2017 – GameStart 2017 (#GameStart2017), Southeast Asia’s Premier Game Convention, returns for its 4th edition on 14 & 15 October 2017 with a Cyberpunk theme and more consumer-friendly and industry-centric content. Organiser Eliphant partners the International Mobile Gaming Awards (IMGA) for the second edition of its SEA awards and will organise the inaugural SEA Summit business conference on 12 and 13 October. Gamers and industry players can look forward to annual favourites returning as well as new and exciting content, including showcases of upcoming blockbuster games, esports, indie games, retro gaming, and cosplay.

New additions include a large GameStart Tabletop area to play, discover, and compete on new and well-loved tabletop and arcade-style games. Key exhibitors include Wizards of the Coast, who will bring popular card game Magic: The Gathering, to the event for the first time, and Grey Ogre Games, with more details to be revealed closer to date.  More information on the GameStart Tabletop activities can be found at www.gamestart.asia/tabletop.

This year, the region’s most popular conventions will join forces at GameStart, showcasing a selection of choice content from across Asia. In addition to partnerships with Taipei Game Show (Taiwan) and BEKRAF Game Prime (Indonesia), C3 AFA (C3 Anime Festival Asia) – Southeast Asia’s biggest Japanese popular culture event platform – comes in as a co-marketing and content partner, looking to bring killer Japanese content to the event.  Visitors can also look forward to enjoying indie gaming content from Taiwan and Indonesia.

More Popular Culture and AR treats for visitors

Returning to GameStart 2017 in response to popular demand is Doujin Market, Singapore’s largest community curated youth arts and illustration fair. In partnership with Neo Tokyo Project, Singapore’s first dedicated pop-culture marketing collective, Doujin Market is back for a second year with almost double the number of artist tables from last year.

During the convention, visitors can also look forward to meeting and appreciating the craft and stunning game cosplay from Astro Kerrie and Yasemin Arslan, invited cosplay guests from Australia. Astro Kerrie is sponsored by pop culture partner event, Evolve Perth, who will also be co-sponsoring the cash prize of GameStart’s Game On! Cosplay Runway.

On the AR front, organisers announced that NexRealm will bring the world’s first augmented reality techno sports, HADO, to the convention. HADO is the first esports based on wearable devices and AR technology using head mount displays and motion sensors. Just like real-life sports, players are free from cables and will not be restricted to being in front of a screen. Visitors will get the chance to try the “Player VS Player” matches at GameStart 2017.

Indies and Start-ups to return to Founders Base

Another popular favourite is Founders Base, GameStart’s special indie area. Offering subsidized booths to individuals, start-ups and small companies that create or work with games, visitors can try a wide array of games made in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.

Limited booths are still available on a first come first served basis, and interested applicants can find out more at gamestart.asia/exhibit-with-us.

Fighting for Top Gaming Honours

South East Asia Major (SEAM) 2017, Southeast Asia’s largest fighting game tournament, will see top players storm the halls as its biggest ever edition will be held in GameStart 2017. The line-up includes the Asia Regional Finals for Capcom Pro Tour 2017 (Street Fighter V), Asia Regionals for Tekken World Tour 2017 (Tekken 7), and the first Asia Championship for Windjammers (highly popular retro game that has been re-released for PS4). The total prize pool is more than US$50,000 between the three events. In addition to the three big tournaments, Guilty Gear XRD 2, Gundam Versus and BlazBlue Central Fiction will be held. More games will be announced in the coming weeks.

Discover and Recognise the best mobile and Indie Games right here

GameStart 2017 will host the second edition of IMGA SEA, with the awards ceremony held on 13 October. The competition is open to mobile game developers, studios and publishers based in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The inaugural IMGA SEA competition last year saw nearly 300 games submitted from eight countries, with 11 developers awarded.

For indie game lovers, the GameStart Indie Award will be right up their alley. Visitors can vote for their favourite indie game showcased at GameStart 2017, and the winning game developer will win a sponsored trip to exhibit in Taipei Game Show 2018 in January 2018.

Top Industry Players Take the Pulse on the Games Business in the region

Jointly organized by IMGA and Eliphant, the summit aims to facilitate knowledge sharing, networking and collaboration opportunities among companies based in Southeast Asia, and those looking to enter the region. This conference will highlight the games business in Southeast Asia.  Conference themes include esports while attendees can look forward to topics on game trends and development, business and marketing. The full speaker and topic list will be announced closer to date.

Interested attendees can register at www.theseasummit.com for updates. Pre-registration is required to attend the conference. While pre-registration is free, tickets are limited and priority will be given to games industry professionals.

PlayStation Experience 2017 – South East Asia PREVIEW

by The Captain for the new Chapter – Pop Culture FUN – Malaysia.

All gamer folks are buzzing the news on cyber space since the mega announcement by leading video game platform Sony Computer Entertainment Asia! Last year we had 4 PlayStation 4 game title launches & it was such a roar. Gamers got off their couch, came to the shopping mall venues, played demos, met up with friends, picked up freebies all the way till past midnight…. it was great! Street Fighter V, Uncharted 4, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Final Fantasy XV. These midnight game launch events were certainly not “Game Start Asia” for us here in Malaysia but it was reason enough for gamers to be excited about.

So what is this PlayStation Experience? – Well basically the PlayStation Experience or PSX for short is an event that showcases the latest / newest / upcoming games for the PlayStation platforms…. PS4, PS VR, PS Vita etc. It started out in 2014 & is a yearly event held in December in America. It debuted in Las Vegas in the first year & has moved to California since. This year, Malaysia is so privileged (if not extremely fortunate), to be the selected country / city for the PSX summer. To have this event in my own country is already a privilege but to be the host for the entire South East Asia region, is yet another honour too.

So, the PSX SEA 2017, which I dub to be PSX Summer  haha or PSX Asian Summer haha (syiok sendiri because I am so happy), will feature most of the fresh stuff unveiled at the recent E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) 2017. E3 is an industry-only event, which means if you’re not part of the video game industry in some way, you don’t get to go 😦 But Hey! We got PSX SEA 2017 & it’s in Kuala Lumpur so rejoice! Again I say rejoice!

Here’s some highlights which were already announced. For more info & up to date news, you should go straight to the official FB event page & official FB page.

Star Wars 40th Anniversary Fan Celebration 2017 – Malaysia

The Star Wars 40th Anniversary Fan Celebration 2017 – Malaysia dubbed #TheForceis40 event – is happening right now at the Blue & Orange Atrium at Sunway Pyramid. The Orange Atrium is where all the Brands are participating (as in the photos – Hasbro, Hot Wheels, Royal Selangor etc. The Blue Atrium is where the Fan Communities will be having their activities this weekend.

The schedule as stated in the first 2 shots. After last years #GoRogueMY Rogue One movie event, it’s great to see another Star Wars event so soon 🙂

Full album here on Facebook: Star Wars 40th Anniversary Fan Celebration 2017 – MALAYSIA.

My Top 5 most impressive stuff today were:
1) The Lego displays by the LUG of Malaysia. Inspired the photographer in me 😀

2) #HotWheels Tracks to try!!

3) That NEW Royal Selangor #RoyalSelangor #Pewter #MillenniumFalcon Millennium Falcon with retractable landing gear!! OMG a gorgeous RM2,200!

4) That NEW Royal Selangor Pewter #LukeSkywalker lightsaber! Beautiful!!

5) Glad to see PlayStation Asia there with the #PS4 with #StarWarsBattleFront demo stations & Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens. 6 Stations to try them but the MOST IMPRESSIVE was the ability to try the #PSVR demo mission on Star Wars Battlefront! Get in the cockpit of the classic T-65 X-Wing! Fly thru space with Red Squadron, back at your R2 unit, look down at your pilot suit, your boots, your gloves, your X-Wing dash board…. and even WATCH YOURSELF BREATHE!! It was amazing!!

So don’t forget to swing by this gigantic fan event. Almost all the Star Wars fan communities will be present & running their own activities on the weekend. Despite this being a fan event – official recognised (by Lucasfilm Ltd) groups such as The 501st Legion Malaysia Garrison, The Rebel Legion Malaysia Outpost, Fightsaber Malaysia and Star Wars Malaysia Fan Club will be in attendance! “Today will be a day long remembered!”

Gong Xi Fa Chai Luncheon with Playstation

16486905_1403189916392356_5229362412697127898_o_resizeSo fortunate to be invited by PlayStation Asia to a special CNY makan makan. PlayStation Asia Regional Head of Product Management, Mr. Arata Naito, was present to answer any questions we had about 2017. It wouldn’t be just your average PlayStation event if there were no announcements or advance demos. Got a chance to try out 3 games there too.

16463554_1403190309725650_899580824618869940_o_resizeFirst is the much anticipated Horizon Zero Dawn huhu which is an open world action RPG. All the hype is high as Horizon Zero Dawn won Best Original Game at the Game Critics Game Critics Awards 2015 & 2016. The country side environment looks like a page out of middle-earth! It’s also hard to not think that when the main character, heroine Aloy, draws a bow as ranged weapon. 3rd-person player games with Bows are just so intriguing to me!! This action RPG is a PlayStation exclusive & will be released 28 Feb 2017. The game is developed by Guerrilla Games who is best know for their Killzone game series. 16664986_1403189963059018_3463836743865071526_o_resize

Second was Nioh, which was a dark, samurai action RPG set in the 1600s Sengoku period fighting lotsa ‘yokai’ / supernatural foes in 3rd person fashon. This game is developed by Team Ninja & published by Koei Tecmo… some legendary gaming names there! Team Ninja is famous for the sexy fighting game Dead or Alive & … the Ninja Gaiden series. When Koei + 3rd person is mentioned I can’t help but think Dynasty Warriors / Samurai Warriors series. Yes it did turn out that way but with more gorgeous graphics, more skilled gameplay and tough ass baddies to beat. “Tough”? It’s “Ninja Gaiden + Tecmo” tough to beat… if u get my drift. 16463658_1403189896392358_1996014426530068550_o_resize

Third was the Singapore developed Stifled for the VR. This thriller brought a new dimension to suspense & fear by only giving you echolocation to navigate your way in the dark surroundings of this VR environment. That’s some pretty cool inovation & story telling there. Feels so much like Daredevil’s radar sense… sonar abilities… just minus that Ninja training by Stick, to kickass! haha Mr. Justin Ng from Gattai Games was present all the way from Singapore to answer anything we had to ask about the production of the game as well as developing a game for the VR. 16463057_1403190079725673_7931893669677757713_o

Nice afternoon. Looking forward to more PlayStation events in 2017!

#Playstation #PS4 #SonyPlaystation #PlaystationVR #HorizonZeroDawn #Nioh #Stifled #HiltonParkingRate #PopCultureFun #PopCultureFunMY #Console

*This was held in Hilton PJ, parking rate was horrific RM7 per hour – max flat rate RM30. Unless u went there for a dinner function, you’d be paying RM7 per hour or flat RM30. This is the absolute MOST amount I’ve had to pay for any event coverage. And I thought Mandarin Oriental KL flat rate of RM13 was expensive!! -__-

Final Fantasy XV Launch 2016 – Malaysia

_dsc6565-2The started out with video game event revival with the Street Fighter V launch in January for the PS4 at Bangsar APW. Then following the course of the year we had the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End mid night launch in Sunway Pyramid then Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare midnight launch in Galactic Laser, Sunway Pyramid_dsc6568-2

After an already exciting year for PlayStation Asia console fans… came the even bigger event! A worthy finale for 2016… in which we can celebrate the return of console events! _dsc6581-2

_dsc6570-2

Fun and relevant freebies xD

huhu We heard that only us, in Malaysia, got this event launch!! Oh yea! Yet even more to thank Mr. Wan Hazmer for… besides teh tarik + roti canai in the back streets of FFXV 😀 img_20161128_212612-2

Yes, he is the home town hero… the man of the hour… ‘home boy’ does country proud in Japan!! It was great to see him in person at the event talking to friends & fans. He was certainly the man of the hour and it was great to see him mingling with attendees.

Not only has he put Malaysia on the map in the gaming world, he now has even introduced the gaming world to our culture… food & drink… which is SO Malaysia xD A really Malaysian past time!! Hahaha “Jalan-jalan cari makan”, “In Malaysia we only have 1 meal… with short breaks in between!” haha Keep up the good work Mr. Wan Hazmer! It was a very nice community touch to have this event in Malaysia & have our local hero in attendance – Thank you Sony PlayStation.

_dsc6575-2

Familiar faces in the crowd! It’s the Comic Fiesta Team!

Now this is not just a random place to have the event. These specific places were selected because 1. It had to be a place that could stay open after 10pm because it’s a midnight launch… so the crowd has to be there till past the stroke of midnight. So the selected venues must be able to sustain the air-con for the entire duration of the event. 2. location selected had to have thematic significance or content significance! i.e. Call of Duty midnight launch was held at Galactic Laser!

So with the selection of GSC Maxx aka the ORIGINAL (first) IMAX cinema in Malaysia… we knew it was going to be some extra SPECIAL content install for us. What’s the hype with this being the first / original IMAX hall? Well firstly, because it was built with an optimal IMAX blueprint spec and not built on an improvised space . This screen is a 3 storeys high (yes, as in a house with 3 levels high), and it has a large seating capacity, in this case 488pax and the screen + seat tilt in an angle that allows more ‘sweet-spot’ viewing… with less distortion (yes I am a hard core movie buff haha).

img_20161128_214037-2

488 seating capacity at the GSC Maxx hall at Berjaya Times Square!! Gigantous!!

_dsc6601-2

Now that it is a GSC Maxx hall, I am not so sure about the quality of projection but I know that the view angle is great & the sound system should be great, if still maintained properly 🙂

Anyways, back to the event haha at the right time, all the attendees were ushered into this gigantous hall where the PlayStation, the game creators and Mr. Wan Hazmer has lotsa goodies for us!! The first glimpses to welcome us was the glorious 4K game trailers and footage!! You really had to be there to see it!! img_20161128_213606-2

So here are the sights from the very very special FFXV launch at GSC Maxx, Berjaya Times Square, 28 Nov 2016! For the full album check out our FB page: FFXV Launch 2016 – Malaysia

img_20161128_210717-2*Finally just wanted to acknowledge & honour one of the big influences from inside PlayStation SEA regional office who always vouches for Malaysia, Mr. Teoh. He has come a long way since the Malaysia office in late 2000s. He continues to strive to have events for the gaming community here in Malaysia. If you remember the Street Fighter IV competition at E-Curve back in 2008, then you have an idea of where his heart is 🙂 If you’re a PlayStation gamer and you see him at an event, do go up & thank him 🙂

Looking forward to more gaming events in 2017!!

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Midnight Launch – Malaysia

Just when I was thinking… it’s been a big gap from the last gaming event, the Uncharted 4 midnight launch Malaysia, came the news of the launch of the next chapter in the EPIC first person shooter games – Call of Duty! Well for me I wasn’t feeling the gap that much because I managed to head down to Singapore for South East Asia’s premiere gaming event -Game Start Asia 2016! huhu That was fun & yet another LEGIT “Convention” in Singapore.

Anyhow I was starting to feeling the gap for the Malaysian friends & fans as maybe its more than time to get out & about again! Klang Valley folks were fortunate get a bonus *Pokemon Go Launch (fan event) which was parked at the recent Cosplay Corner. But other than that it was kinda quiet. Then came the news from PLAY Interactive of confirmed date, time & VENUE of the next game launch. Woo hoo! Great timing.

*On another note, thanks to the guys (fan event) who were diligent & relentless (I might add) at pursuing official endorsement for the local 3DS Community – we have the chance to experience a bonus gaming event later this month. More of that in the next article!*

Now, Call of Duty & Medal of Honour were games I thoroughly enjoyed playing on the Playstation 2 (PS2). It really fueled my undiscovered passion for first person shooters & the desire to be a head-shot sniper! xD The only things to fear in the early games were MG42 & tanks. Anyhow after those were over & the life of the PS2 had end I had no desire nor the extra funds to buy the next gen console (then) Playstation 3. Then while hanging out at the uber cool – Outpost Cafe at Cineleisure Damansara (now E@curve), good friend of mine ask to play the latest rendition of Call of Duty called Modern Warfare. OMG I got hooked & just had to get a PS3 to play this game & have continued ever since. No Playstation 4 for me yet… but I guess some where down the line.

==========================

So yet another EPIC franchise launches it next chapter & HURRAY for the local fans & friends that we get to get out & geek a out again!

Looks like the organisers like Sunway Pyramid! But the cool twist this time is that it would take place in GALACTIC LASER, Sunway Pyramid! The theme made sense, the place was relevant & the space was good! Great choice guys!

So folks who had pre-ordered their game could come to the event to pick up their game as soon as the stroke of midnight. By pre-ordering you got 5 extra goodies to take home – a movie size 2-sided glossy poster, a tee shirt,  a tactical themed watch, Bonus Map “Terminal” and Zombies in Spaceland!

There were 3 bundle of the game:
1) Standard Edition – Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Game Disc)
2) Legacy Edition – Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Game Disc) + Modern Warfare Remastered (Digital Download)
3) Legacy Pro Edition – Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Game Disc) + Modern Warfare Remastered (Digital Download) + Season Pass + Collectible Steelbook + Digital Game Soundtrack + Additional Digital Content

BONUS TREAT
For those who attended there were 2 major bonus treats! First it was the PLAY & Redeem challenges. You needed to complete 4 simple tasks to get 4 stamps on your card in which you could later redeem a Playstation goodie bag 🙂

The next treat was epic – all attendees would get the chance to play Galactic Laser … team group death-match for free!! All you had to do was to line up & wait your turn. Of course each game last 10 minutes so it was limited to how much time that was available for everyone to play. But all in all it had the right theme & the right GAMERS!

For the full album of photos go to our FB album: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Midnight Launch – Malaysia

*HINT*: A little blue bird told me that there will another Playstation 4 title launch event before the month is over!! So we gamers get 3x more in November! Reward for waiting so long? Maybe hohoho!

A BIG thanks to PLAY Interactive Asia & Playstation Asia  for organising this event. Will be looking forward to the next one!
