After 2016 big big hyped Captain America: Civil War promo events, at Sunway Pyramid & Sunway Putra Mall, we were hoping for more of these events to come… primarily hosted in the Klang Valley of course huhu. Then 2017, we had our very first Hollywood Red Carpet gala… the movie Baby Driver, lead actors Ansel Elgort, Lily James and Director Edgar Wright making their appearance on the red carpet! All media from South East Asia we down to catch a few moments with the cast & director.
This year Avengers: Infinity War marks the culmination of 10 years / decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe and the beginning battle royal between Earth’s Mightest Heroes with the galaxy’s Mad Titan foe!! Every MCU movie took things to another level and the recent Black Panther movie has set the distinctive standard of how good the MCU can still get!
The Reason for the Season!
So, for the fans it was no surprise that South East Asia would get a red carpet fan event…. question is where? So far it’s been South Korea and Singapore. So, when this event was announced… friends & fans rejoiced especially in Singapore. They’ve been getting the Hollywood treatment for a while now (7 years), with the first one being the Green Hornet movie with lead actors Seth Rogan & Jay Chou in attendance.
As for fans in Malaysia… the “YAY!” celebrations were a little less…. until… PETRON MALAYSIA stepped in to give 30 lucky MALAYSIAN winners (and partner), the chance to attend this Red Carpet Fan Event!
And the winners are…… *drum roll* – list attached. Was glad to see many the folks from our new group – Marvel Fans Malaysia (https://www.facebook.com/groups/MarvelFansMY/) be making the ROADTRIP down for even greater glory. They’re gunning for the chance to meet RDJ or Mister Doctor (Benedict Cumberbatch) aka Sherlock aka Khan aka Smaug. Then there is our group co-founder and Outpost Productions Commander – Richard Chua who is a MEGA Iron man and Dr. Strange fan that dates all the way back to his youth!! haha Double the joy and even double the urgency to get on that red carpet!
It’s gonna be one heck of a road trip for them! I can’t wait to see the photos huhu!
So once again, a very big thank to PETRON MALAYSIA from all the Pop Culture / Geeks in Malaysia, for this one of a kind opportunity. Keep up the good work! (I’ve been filling Esso + Mobil for a long time and followed thru to Petron! Am very happy too!)

Official Captain America appearance in Malaysia
Well just hours after I posted my blog about how much the local Captain America: Civil War road show in Malaysia lacked content, Sunway Pyramid dropped this bomb of a poster. Sunway Pyramid kept this as a surprise & only revealed this on the premiere night of #CaptainAmericaCivilWar in Malaysia on Weds 27 April. Obviously it wouldn’t be Mr. Chris Evans himself appearing or else they would have about a months worth of promotion haha not to mention the tons of $$ involed. So based on experience, my best guess was that it would be “an official licensed costume worn by a kuai-lo model”. In the end I was right… but then again there was so much more to it than that.
What was interesting (cute funny) was that the Sunway Pyramid FB page didn’t really know how to phrase what was going to take place. I don’t know whether they wanted to keep certain things ambiguous so to keep the shoppers in suspense or was it a licensee guidelines… I won’t know but I just felt that I must go! The sign above phrased it “Meet & Greet Marvel’s Captain America”. The Sunway Pyramid FB page coined it as “OMG! MARVEL’S CAPTAIN AMERICA CHARACTER IS COMING TO SUNWAY PYRAMID?” and “Come take a picture with Marvel’s Captain America character this 28th April to 2nd May…”. Marvel’s Captain America character? Hehe that caught my attention.

He kindly obliged to pose like the image on my tee shirt! 😀 And I think I was the only one from the crowd who understood when he said “Let’s do 2 poses… first one back to back”… haha cosplayer talk xD I must admit.. my right arm felt missing a shield xD
I was telling him I wore the right shirt in my collection for the right version of Cap – the Avengers 1 version designed by Agent Phil Coulson
Why is this so special?
- This is the official movie costume, made by the same production house in California who made the Avengers 1 wardrobe. YES, the shield too. It is the aluminium metal promotional shield use for media appearances, not the stunt shield (rubber) or the actor shield (carbon fibre). Whether the costume & shield is screen-used, I don’t know. But it was awesome. His glove alone had all those blue patches like seen in the actual prop display at SDCC 2012.
- The Captain America talent is the official contracted individual to represent the character of Captain America at Disneyland theme parks worldwide. In short, this means in the Disneyland Universe, when you say “Captain America is coming” it means this guy is coming! Like how in the MCU, when they say Captain America himself is coming to Singapore…. it means Mr. Chris Evans!
- Professional? The appearance team was flown in all the way from Anahiem, California… home to the first & original Disneyland (now Resort too)!
- Professional? The appearance is conducted, run & overseen by Disney folks from the South East Asia Regional office and Anahiem, California.
- Professional? You got to hear about the working guidelines & ethics from the event production folks. Very educational & inspiringly insightful.
If you haven’t caught it yet do head down to Sunway Pyramid because this professional & official sanctioned appearance is only for a limited time only = 28 April – 2 May.
Appearance is 4 times daily: 12pm, 2:30pm, 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
Blur photo yes… but it is a key moment as a fan. It’s the same feeling I had when I read in the comic where Captain America meets with President Roosevelt after a successful mission & it was President Roosevelt that presented Cap with the gift of the new round shaped shield to replace the old one! In awe
I’d rather take a picture saluting him but we’re only allowed a short time on stage & only limited to 2 photo clicks… apparently.

All I can say is that before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)… trying to find a Captain America shirt was just like a heart breaking love series with a tragic endings but the series never ends! But now woo hoo … really spoilt for choice and the merchandisers are spoilt for pricing!

Captain America: Civil War road show – Malaysia
Oh yea & if you all didn’t already know, there are 2, not 1 Captain America: Civil War road shows. Usually Disney has this BIG-A$$ display in Mid Valley but I guess not any more haha. Case in point: Star Wars: The Force Awakens 80% T-70 Resistance X-WING, Avengers: Age of Ultron 1:1 Scale Hulk & Hulkbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) the pirate ship Queen Anne’s Revenge, Alice in Wonderland (2010) Mad Hatter’s Tea Party etc. Good memories 🙂

On second thought, maybe it’s one & half road shows haha The Sunway Putra Mall’s content is a mix of other stuff. The 1:1 scale statue of Captain America is from last years Avengers: Age of Ultron road show from Mid Valley. The premium format ‘civil war’ statues of Cap vs Iron man is the comic version. Sunway Pyramid has got the legit 1:1 scale movie version Cap vs Iron man made by Beast Kingdom. 
However, I think those Team Cap & Team Iron man 1:1 scale standees are really cool. They are cost effective to make & are very exciting photo opportunities for fans. So this would make it fun to go visit the Sunway Putra Mall site of this road show. 
Overall, content is still lacking these Disney road shows… which unfortunately also means “content lacking at my beloved brand Marvel road shows”. Both malls were covered in a gorgeous Captain America blue carpet with red & black + impressive structures. But for activities… 2 Nerf shooting range, 1 photo booth to run a total of 24 days… thats like 3 weeks+. I’ve worked for the DC Comics side of things for their road show, and it was more immersive & had a touch of the fan elements in it. Disney side… hmm…. well whether it’s the tight budget or strict rules… or all budget is put to Marina Bays Sands SEA premiere … here is the obvious score card:

- DC store doing way better than Marvel store in Malaysia (surprising).
- DC road show better than Marvel road show in Malaysia (strange).
- It’s more fun being a DC fan than a Marvel fun in Malaysia (indifferent)
WHERE IS THE LOVE MARVEL MALAYSIA?
Kesimpulannya: I can’t help but feel pity the other brand who is a mogul owned by a bigger mogul but yet is under performing or rather less preferred by the Malaysia fans. Or maybe it’s just better not to be owned by a mogul?

Looking forward to get the 6″ Marvel Legends that I want but already now their very very scarce. I hope it is because of 1 per case and not because of you darn scalpers! (Scalpers, your time will come! And you will be repaid in full!)
On another note the sudden increase in the 6″ ML is shocking!! RM 139.90 for a figure 
It’s a whole RM40 hike in price for whatever reason?
Out of all the Civil War stuff I’ve seen, this new ‘LEGENDS’ pack is really caught my interest. It calls out to me to buy…. but for RM139.90???? Are you kidding me? The figure is gonna cost some RM42.90… which means to say the bike is RM 97?? Really? It’s not even a licensed replica of the CA:TWS Harley Davison Street 750 or the Project Live Wire from Age of Ultron! I prefer to pair my figure with the low-rider Harley looking bike from the 3.75″ Wolverine movie series bike! haha!
